Since its founding in 2005, AFN has focused on bringing asset building grantmakers together and providing access to the information they need to promote economic mobility and financial security for low-income families. In 2012, AFN will begins its 6th year with a commitment to increase the number of asset-building grantmakers, serve as a resource for information on promising practices and a convener of content experts and funders, and develop a policy education infrastructure.

AFN has been and continues to be generously supported by a core group of foundations committed to the vision of building a network whose impact will be greater than the sum of its parts. However to realize AFN's full potential, a membership structure has been developed to support our activities going forward. We look forward to having you and your institution join us as a member of AFN in 2012!

Asset development is a relatively new approach to poverty alleviation and long-term economic development for low-wealth families. The focus of asset development is to provide the tools, mechanisms and incentives to enable low-income people to save, invest and grow assets that will promote greater self-sufficiency and opportunity.

While the approach is relatively new, the tools used in asset development have long been employed in community development and poverty alleviation work, including: developing access to fair and affordable financial services, promoting thrift and increasing opportunities to save, increasing high-return investment opportunities, financial education and long-term financial planning.

The Asset Funders Network is a community of foundations and grantmakers advancing policies, and strategies that help low-wealth individuals accumulate assets, build their net worth, and become owners and stakeholders in their communities.

The Asset Funders Network was formed in April 2005 by a group of foundations seeking to bring grantmakers together to share their funding goals and strategies and to develop a community of funders committed to developing the field of asset building. The Asset Funders Network explores a range of asset-building tools and strategies, such as savings and investment vehicles, retirement security, homeownership, higher education, self-employment, and the wealth gap; with the goal of helping its members make better strategic funding decisions.

Asset Funders Network Purpose

The purpose of the Network is to help our members make better strategic funding decisions by sharing successful strategies for increasing ownership of high-return assets and promoting access to the tools and support needed to build wealth.

The Network provides an opportunity for foundations and grantmakers to better support asset policy and products that assist people with limited resources or otherwise unable to build sufficient financial reserves to with stand emergency and plan for their future. The Asset Funders Network will share successful strategies and approaches that have helped low-income Americans save for homeownership, higher education, small business and long-term investment opportunities.
